In my opinion, the media could begin to advertise women doing what would be stereotyped as "blue jobs", in order to show that women can do what would be labelled as male jobs too. At the end of the day, we are all human, male or female. By thinking about how men and women would be stereotypically represented in certain situations and mixing it up to cause a bit of controversy, would  change people's perspectives and, consequently, bring more equality to the representation of men and women. I also think the media should stop editing men and women because it gives false idols to society and causes people to beat themselves into looking like that person or hating themselves because they don't look like that slim celebrity on the front page of the magazine. If the media began to publish and advertise reality, people in society wouldn't have views on how pretty people should look, that have been influenced by fake, edited images.

 Here, in this advert from the 1950s, a woman is displayed in a kitchen with the slogan, "another day in paradise".This conveys how society moulded women into people who would enjoy staying at home in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning for their husbands and families. Also, the fact that the woman is wearing a lot of makeup with a very feminine and stylish hair-do, suggest that society had an ideology that women should be very feminine with long hair and that they should sit looking pretty. This supports Judith Butler's theory that society moulds people into how they think they should act, according to their gender. They use the media like a sort of propaganda to brainwash people into believing their theories on what is being an 'acceptable' (stereotypical) man or woman.    

Patriarchal society- Where men are in authority over women in all aspects of society (men are superior to women.) I don't think I live in a patriarchal society because I can do things that women of previous eras were not allowed to do. For example, when I get old enough I will be allowed to vote as a woman and my vote will be taken into account. Also, I will be able to apply for any job that I want and I wont have to stay at home with children, whilst my husband goes to work and becomes the provider. In 2018, I do not feel that males are superior to me or any stronger than I am and I feel that I can do whatever I want to do and have freedom of speech. Further more, I don't feel that I cannot have friendships with boys, 'hang around' with boys instead of girls at school or that boys don't accept me into their friendship groups. More women have won an Oscar for playing the role of "wives" than men have for playing the role of "husbands". The roles of the men are jobs known to be  more professional and well-respected than the roles of women (e.g. Brie Larson had the role as a "mother", whereas Matt Damon had the role as a "scientist".) Part of Hollywood's appeal is to show us what we can be, not what we are. However, the fact that women have been given roles as mothers but  men have been given the roles as scientists, gives the impression that women are only good at one thing and that is being a mother or a wife. Also, more women have won Oscars for playing sexual roles than men. This shows that roles emphasising a woman's sexuality are highlighted more than roles emphasising the sexuality of a male. The wage gap between men and women in Hollywood is also an issue that has been highlighted by many well-known actresses like Jennifer Lawrence.

1) I think the main reasons for the lack of equality in video games is because, stereotypically, boys are more likely to play video games or be linked to video games. In my opinion, society is to blame because they have stereotyped boys and girls by making videogames more of a "boy activity"  and "girl activities" being more of playing with Barbie dolls or dressing up as princesses etc. This has been represented in the higher number of male characters in videogames, making the game more "boy-ish"/male-dominated. Also, it could be because, in the past, men have been presented as a stronger figure than women and as the "providers". This could suggest why male characters in videogames have been played more. Another reason why male characters could be played more than female characters, is because the media advertise them more. As a TV watcher and technology user myself, I don't see many adverts that advertise a game where there is a main female ...
